Queens, NY – The Jim Owles Liberal Democratic Club, the powerful citywide LGBT political organization, today endorsed Ali Najmi, attorney and community organizer, for the New York City Council, District 23, representing Eastern Queens.
“Ali Najmi’s record of commitment to the LGBT community is rock solid. Ali is a true progressive and inclusive leader whose ability to build a coalition among diverse communities will make him a fierce advocate for human rights,” said Allen Roskoff, club president. “He will be the people’s champion - he is fighting against anti-Semitism, stumping out homophobia, ending the brutality at Rikers and had added his voice demanding that Governor Cuomo start issuing clemencies as an act of mercy.”

Born and raised in Queens, Ali Najmi is a successful criminal defense and civil rights attorney. Ali served as Legislative Director for New York City Council Member Mark Weprin, where he worked on important civil rights legislation. He is past president of the Eleanor Roosevelt Democratic Club. Ali is known for his unique ability to bring communities together to advocate for change. He was a key organizer for the Obama campaign in 2008 and 2012 and is an active member of the Alliance of South Asian American Labor (ASAAL) and the NAACP.
The Jim Owles Liberal Democratic Club, named for the legendary gay rights pioneer Jim Owles, was formed in 2004 as a citywide political activist club with a mission to secure human rights, dignity, and freedom for all people. We believe that the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community can no longer support candidates who are not willing to recognize our basic rights and freedoms. We need to speak out strongly in favor of issues concerning us.
As a multi-issue, progressive Democratic club, the Jim Owles Liberal Democratic Club also call for an end of all wars, increased AIDS funding, universal health care, expect continued protection and expansion of reproductive rights.
