NAJMI SALUTES THE 25th ANNIVERSARY OF ADA ACT
FAMILY EXPERIENCE PROVIDES SPECIAL UNDERSTANDING OF NEED FOR EQUALITY
STATEMENT BY ALI NAJMI: “I was born in our district at Long Island Jewish Hospital but my parents had previously moved to Queens to seek a better life and better services for my older sister who has Downs Syndrome. My close relationship with my sister gives me a special understanding of the need for government-funded social services and health care.
Twenty-five years ago, through the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), the federal government committed to eliminating discrimination against people with disabilities. It is among the most important progressive pieces of legislation ever passed and as an elected official - I will be a staunch advocate for people with disabilities. I am committed to opening gateways to full participation and opportunity for people with disabilities. We must utilize city government to pursue equality of opportunity, full participation, independent living, integration, and economic self-sufficiency for persons with disabilities.
